What a whirlwind experience at the Becker’s Healthcare CEO + CFO Roundtable in Chicago! It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with clients, future partners, and fellow healthcare leaders. I also had the privilege of speaking on a panel moderated by Scott Becker, where we explored CEO + CFO hospital strategies – and I’m excited to share the biggest trends and takeaways that emerged from that panel and the entire conference.
Here’s what’s top of mind for health systems:
1. AI is Here, But Health Systems Are Still Testing the Waters
Everyone’s talking about AI, but most organizations are still dipping their toes in the water. The buzz at the conference was around clinical documentation automation—it’s already improving provider satisfaction and delivering ROI. Health systems are exploring AI’s potential in everything from revenue cycles to payroll automation. The challenge? Deploying AI thoughtfully to truly enhance workflows and support both people and processes. While AI is not a silver bullet, it’s undeniably a game-changer, propelling us far beyond where we were just a few years ago.
2. The Workforce of Tomorrow Starts Today
A big focus was on staffing pipelines. Health systems are teaming up with local schools and universities to build a sustainable workforce. While filling clinical roles remains tough, physician recruitment is becoming even more competitive. Overall, health systems face an increasingly competitive landscape for top talent – flexible work schedules and non-cash rewards are becoming critical for attracting and retaining clinical staff. Providers are looking for work-life balance, and organizations are stepping up with compensation models that evolve beyond the traditional wRVU-based structure. Retention efforts are shifting toward a broader, more holistic approach to workforce management, offering incentives that go beyond salary. Expect more investment in recruitment and retention to meet rising demand.
3. Cost Efficiency
With cost pressures mounting, health systems are laser-focused on becoming more efficient, especially when it comes to the site of care. Moving care from inpatient settings to ambulatory settings is one of the primary ways organizations are cutting costs while still maintaining quality care. The goal is to streamline operations and optimize resources without compromising on patient outcomes.
4. Waiting for the Trump Effect
With the upcoming return of a Trump administration, healthcare leaders are bracing for the unknown. Everyone’s closely watching how future policies will affect everything from reimbursement rates to healthcare regulations. The uncertainty is real, and leaders are ready to pivot when needed.
5. Transformational Infrastructure: Sink or Swim
Health systems are at a crossroads when it comes to infrastructure projects. If they haven’t already started transforming their operations, they risk falling behind. Those that are ahead are reaping the benefits, while others must play catch-up to remain competitive.
6. M&A: The Show Goes On
Mergers and acquisitions aren’t slowing down. In fact, health systems are on a consolidation path to expand their reach and optimize resources. If the pace of M&A continues like it did in 2024, expect even bigger moves in the years to come.
As we continue to explore these trends, one thing is clear: the need for innovative solutions and strong partnerships is greater than ever. At Ludi, we’re excited to help health systems optimize their workforce strategies, align compensation models, and leverage data to meet the future head-on. Looking forward to more conversations and collaborations that will drive our industry forward!
